IPERYT “The Patchwork Gehinnom” Pagan Records It’s album number three for Iperyt, which is the Polish word for Iprit, more commonly known as mustard gas… which may give you a clue or two that this album is not crammed full of ballads. Quite the opposite: In fact, this is (in places) so heavy that I can only play it when I’m the mood for some aural destruction. If I need some downtime, this is not the album I will be playing. Trying to pigeonhole this is impossible as well… while it has the attitude of Black Metal, as well as all-out war, the drum (machine) is set to overdrive and it would give most Industrial bands a scare or two. The vocals have a jackboot siege mentality, with the pseudonym of People Hater being quite an apt moniker. Yet despite all of the hatred that spews out of this release, Iperyt, can still bring things down a notch or two, like they do on From Nowhere To Nowhere… and the calming, yet menacing, feel adds depth to this release. For the most part though, they are kicking down doors, cracking heads and causing general carnage and destruction. The Industrial flavours work really well with the Metal and when they move into overdrive, like on the opener, Phantom Black Dogs, or on the more groove laden, Devil’s Violent Breed, (which is like The Prodigy on a murder spree), they are untouchable. I very nearly missed out on this album. Mir sind neben (frühen) ANAAL NATHRAKH, die auf „The Codex Necro“, aber auch auf neueren Werken zwischendurch immer mal wieder elektronische Einflüsse in Form von Industrial oder D’n’B einfließen lassen, keine anderen Bands bekannt, die diese Verbindung von fiesem Black Metal mit elektronischen Einflüssen zur alles zerstörenden Melange verschmelzen. Das wird wahrscheinlich gemeint gewesen sein, wenn man von „Black Metal ist Krieg“ spricht. Krieg gegen die Ohren und den guten Geschmack. Immer noch Teufel, Tod und auraler Terror an der Schmerzgrenze Während Kollege Möller das damals noch auf dem Vorgänger „No State of Grace“ arg anstrengend und langweilig fand, kann man nicht sagen, dass IPERYT nichts gelernt haben in der Zwischenzeit. Im Grunde ist auch „The Patchwork Gehinnom“ nicht großartig anders: Es gibt wieder die typischen Black Metal Tremolo-Riffs wie eiskaltes Wasser ins Gesicht geklatscht und die Attacken des Schlagzeugs aus der Konserve springen einen unvorbereitet an. Sprachsamples und Industrial-Einflüsse geben wieder das maschinelle, kalte Feeling. Darüber ein paar misanthropische „Hail Satan“ Texte und fertig ist das Rezept. Allerdings kommen neuerdings durch eher hintergründige Melodien und ein paar Geschwindigkeitsvariationen kurze Verschnaufpausen und Aufhänger rein. So zum Beispiel im coolen und abwechslungsreichem Opener „Phantom Black Dogs“ oder dem Rausschmeißer „Checkmate, God“ mit Gitarrenmelodien, die kurz mal die Epik-Zone streifen und auch einer Band wie THE COMMITTEE oder BELPHEGOR gut zu Gesicht stehen würden. Manche Titel sind kurz und überraschend catchy geworden („Mindtaker“, „Worms of the modern World“ „From Nowhere to Nowhere“). Das macht das Material deutlich hörbarer als noch auf den Vorgängern und sogar ein kleiner Groove hat sich hier und da eingeschlichen. Dass die Polen ihre Tracks intern dann Uzi, Walze und so weiter nennen, ergibt durchaus Sinn und zeugt von einem doch recht eigenen Humor. Das rettet die ganze Chose dann letzten Endes vor der Versenkung. Der Gesang ist noch ein wenig eintönig und auch ob des Dauerbombardements der extrem lauten Terrorcore Parts ist es für Otto-Normal Hörer schwierig zu folgen. Für (elektronische) Extremisten Leuten mit Hang zu (textlich und musikalisch) düsterem elektronischem Hardcore oder Terrorcore oder Black Metaller die sich daran nicht stören können somit sicher mal ein Ohr riskieren. Denn die Eigenbeschreibung von IPERYT als „Machinery of sonic warfare“ zieht definitiv und wer dann nach dem Dauerfeuer eines „Panzerdivision Marduk“ beispielsweise die nächste Stufe benötigt um seinen Höhepunkt zu erreichen weil wegen nicht mehr extrem genug, könnte definitiv mal „The Patchwork Gehinnom“ anchecken. Alle anderen machen lieber einen großen Bogen um IPERYT, denn das Zeug ist so giftig, dass Leuten die sonst eher in seichteren Metalgefilden (ja, selbst so manche Black Metaller) zu Hause sind, nach Begegnung wohl mit ärztlichen Beratungen bei gekommen werden muss.
